How one day can change your life.

Updated: Nov 6, 2019

I think the best gifts are experiences. And this year for my birthday my husband and my parents gave me one of the greatest presents. They gifted me tickets to the Power of Success event in Toronto to see two of my idols, Tony Robbins and Rachel Hollis.

If you aren’t familiar with who Tony Robbins is…have you been living under a rock?! I’m kidding! I think the quickest way to get a snapshot of who this inspiring man is, get onto Netflix and watch “I Am Not Your Guru.” Tony is an entrepreneur, bestselling author and the number one business and personal development coach in the world. His businesses make over 5 billion (YES BILLION with a B!) per year. He has been helping people become better versions of themselves for over 40 years.

Chauncey and I with Tony Robbins speaking in the background. This was about 12 hours into the day and we were still happy!

My sister Kirsten was the person to introduce me to this man many years ago. I read his book Awaken the Giant Within when I was in my 20’s and I was hooked. I love his no bullshit style, that one of his favourite words is the F word which coincidentally is also one of my favourite words and I have wanted to see him speak live for over a decade!

Rachel Hollis is my newest inspiration. I read both of her motivational books this year, Girl Wash Your Face and Girl Stop Apologizing and I was inspired to take action immediately. This blog was started right after I finished reading Girl Wash Your Face. I have wanted to be an author for as long as I can remember, but I have not taken any tangible action on this dream. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to write about, but through her books she encouraged me to start now, start today. Why wait? If I don’t practice my writing I’m never going to get any better. I’m never going to start my book if I just keep putting it off. So here I am writing right now because of this woman and her words that encouraged me to get off my ass and do something about my dreams.

When I saw that not only was Tony Robbins coming to town but that he had several other speakers lined up and one of them was Rachel Hollis, I had to go! I told Chauncey how much I wanted to go and he decided it would be a great birthday gift.

Fast forward to a few days ago. We had to get up at 4 am in order to be at the event by 6 am to register and find our seats. Shout out to Grammy for watching our baby girl so we could attend this conference. I’m going to focus on the speakers that had the greatest impact on me that day. As I said I was there to see Tony and Rachel and anything else was going to be a bonus!

I am sure you have heard of the book Men Are from Mars, Woman Are from Venus? If not, it is a book that is definitely worth a read! The author John Gray is a relationship counselor, speaker and author. He was honestly so funny on stage and he spoke so lovingly about his wife that passed away last year. I was happy he was at this event and glad we got to see him speak. He left an impression on both myself and Chauncey and we plan to read his most recent book Beyond Mars and Venus.

I’m going to be truthful, I had never heard of the next speaker Phil Town before that day but wow was he amazing! He told his story of being a broke river guide in the Grand Canyon, and how he met some rich investors on a rafting trip. Long story short the river nearly killed them all but he managed to save their lives. One of the men on that trip told Phil that he would like to repay him for saving his life. He wanted Phil to come to California to teach him all about how to invest his money. That’s how it all began and now Phil is a top investor with three New York Times best sellers. Prior to going to this event Chauncey and I were just discussing how we would like to learn about investing our money more wisely and it was like divine intervention that Phil was one of the speakers that day. His latest book that he wrote with his daughter, Invested is now on my reading list and I suggest you add it to yours as well.

The next speaker that really blew me away was Molly Bloom. Again I had not heard of her prior to this event and she was a truly amazing speaker. She’s an entrepreneur, author and the movie Molly’s Game is based on her memoir about her life. She has a crazy life story and it was really interesting to hear it from her live on stage. If you haven’t heard of her I think either reading her book or giving her movie a watch is definitely worth your time.

I'm literally in awe of Rachel as she is speaking on stage. Heart is full!

In the afternoon I finally got to see my girl Rachel. Rachel Hollis is a New York Times bestselling author, an entrepreneur and motivational speaker. As a speaker she was everything I thought she would be and more! Her energy is contagious; she ran out to Beyoncé “Run the World” and I was jacked up the minute she hit the stage. She wasn’t given a huge amount of time to speak, so she stuck to what she felt were the five most important steps she has taken to get to where she is today.

1) Be very intentional with your time.

2) Be grateful, start a gratitude journal.

3) Be comfortable being uncomfortable.

4) Don’t have a fear of failure.

5) When you fall, stand back up and try again.

I want to leave these here for now, as I plan to do a more in-depth blog post about what she said on stage that day. I want to get a bit deeper into each of these topics, but for now I wanted to give you the highlights of her talk.

Finally the man of the hour Tony Robbins hit the stage and you could literally feel the energy of 9000 people in the audience.

As I mentioned before, Tony has been doing these types of events and speaking on stages for over 40 years. He is a master at connecting with people, even in a room with 9000 people you felt connected to this man and his message.

We spent over four hours with him and I wrote down as much as I could, but I also just tried to be immersed in the moment. There was so much wisdom he shared with us that day and again I plan to dedicate an entire blog post to everything he covered. I don’t want to gloss over what he spoke about but I do want to leave you with one key message he shared. Your emotions can be entirely changed with motion. That sounds pretty simple when I type it, and guess what it was pretty simple in practice that day as well!

What does that mean exactly? Emotions are controlled or created by motion. The way we move determines the way we feel. A really simple example that he demonstrated that day is when he felt our energy was lacking throughout his time on stage, he would have us get up, pump the music and then we jumped up and down waved our hands in the air, did whatever felt good. Once the music settled down and we sat back in our seats, we felt our emotions had changed. We didn’t feel tired or drained, we felt re energized and ready to learn more.

How can you apply this simple trick to your daily life? When you feel your emotions getting the best of you, lets say you are feeling sad or angry. Change your physical state, get up and go for a walk or do what we did that day and jump around to some fun music.

There is so much more I want to cover on this topic, but I know that not everyone has time to read a 20 page blog post! I hope you got something out of this quick snapshot of our day at the Power of Success event. I hope you'll subscribe to my blog so you can look for my upcoming posts. I plan to go into more detail about what Rachel Hollis and Tony Robbins shared with us that day.
